     Welcome!!

I am thrilled to be teaching AP Psychology, Psychology, and AP Human Geography this year! I am passionate about providing my students with the skills to lead healthy, happy, productive lives. I believe in fairness and equity in my teaching, but also recognize that my students have a wide range of varying needs, so I want to do my best to equip my students for success.

    My Professional and Educational Background

I have been an instructor at Madison Central since August 2006. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in History with a minor in English from Mississippi College, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Belhaven College, and am currently working on an Educational Specialist Degree with an emphasis on Emotional and Behavioral Disorders. In 2015, I earned National Board Certification. I have been teaching since 2001 and, over the course of my career, have taught a wide variety of courses including Technology Discovery, English II, Accelerated English II, World History, Public Speaking, Debate I, Debate II, Mississippi Writers, African-American Literature, Oral Communications, Future Studies, and Global Studies.

I have taught AP Psychology and Psychology for the past eight years and am convinced that everyone should take one of these courses. Psychology is a wonderful vehicle for understanding how we think and feel and remember and interact. It is my goal that by the end of my course, my students leave with a better understanding of who they are and how they can manage their feelings and thoughts to build a better world for themselves and everyone around them.

I love Social Studies!! I have been fortunate to have opportunities to work on Psychology curriculum and development on a national level through the American Psychological Association and to have assisted in writing the 2018 Social Studies Curriculum for Mississippi and training teachers around the state to effectively implement that curriculum.

    My Biography

I grew up in Byram, Mississippi, and graduated in 1995 from Byram High School. As a student, I was an active part of the yearbook staff, Fellowship of Christian Students, Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Club, Speech & Debate team, and served as captain of the Academic Competition (Quiz Bowl) team. While in college, I worked as a Youth Ministry Intern and occasional Interim Youth Pastor and I continued serving as a bivocational Youth Pastor during the first nine years of my teaching career.

I am passionate about mental health and currently serve on the Board of Directors for the National Alliance on Mental Health for Mississippi. I have served as Board President since 2016. I am a certified trainer for Mental Health First Aid for Youth and have led trainings all over the state to help teachers and caring adults recognize signs of mental health concerns and intervene to assist teenagers in meeting their mental health needs and addressing suicidal thoughts and feelings. Feel free to contact me if you know of a group that could benefit from this training. (There's a workbook to purchase, but the training is otherwise completely free. Our teachers are volunteers and we are happy for any opportunity to share these important skills.)
