Congratulations on choosing a program with a reputation of excellence and high standards!  This will be my first year at Madison Central and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this amazing team. I spent the last 5 years teaching JROTC at Bryant High School in Arkansas. My family loved the school and the state, but we’ve always wanted to get back to our home state of Mississippi. My wife Heather is from Hattiesburg and I’m from Columbia and we both graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi.

I retired from active duty in 2015 with 28-years of service; 7 years Army and 21 years Air Force. I spent 21 years on flight status and 18 years on parachute jump status. I deployed 4 times – Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Oman. I have lots of war stories and GoPro videos from flying and jumping that will make class educational and interesting.

The upcoming year will be filled with excitement and opportunity. I look forward to continuing the standard of excellence that TSgt Carroll (who recently retired with 20 years as an JROTC instructor) and MSgt Thompson instilled in the program. My previous unit had a very diverse and successful extracurricular program (e.g., Color Guard, Drill, Marksmanship, Drone, Physical Training, Raider, Spirit, Beatification Teams) who competed in at least 12 competitions each year. We routinely placed in every event and I’m excited to bring successful ideas to this program. In AFJROTC you will learn to be a leader.  Coach Vince Lombardi said, “Leaders are made, they are not born”.  They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile. Dedication, commitment, and significant involvement in AFJROTC will provide you with the tools to be a true servant-leader!

“Building Better Citizens for America” is the primary mission of AFJROTC.  We carry this out in a variety of ways. Our aerospace and leadership curriculum, community service projects, and leadership development requirements (extracurricular activities) are designed and structured to provide opportunities for growth.  Another famous coach, Paul “Bear” Bryant once remarked, “If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride - and never quit, you'll be a winner”.  The price of victory is high but so are the rewards. If you make small sacrifices and invest yourself in our program, the rewards are immense.  We will spark your imagination and passion with teams, competitions, and field trips. The rewards will be great …if you are willing to pay the price!!!

I expect improvement, progress, and great accomplishments from you!  MSgt Thompson and I will help you on your road to success by developing positive personal traits such as integrity, teamwork, responsibility, ethics, self-discipline, and respect.  These traits will serve you well here at Madison Central High School and as you travel through your journey of life.

Once again, thank you for choosing to pursue excellence.  MSgt Thompson and I look forward to great success in your academic and JROTC endeavors!  You can reach me at rmccalip@madison-schools.com .
