    Carr Family

Hello! My name is Todd Carr and I will be teaching Biology for the 2023-24 school year!!!

This is my 5th year at Germantown High School teaching Sciences. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience here.

We will be using Canvas for all but the in-class activities we do this year, so please encourage your student to visit their Canvas page. I do also have a Remind. I am looking forward to another great year at Germantown, even with all of the construction that will definitely have an affect on our school year.

If you need to contact me, please email me at tcarr@madison-schools.com

I look forward to getting to know you and your students this year!

    Todd Carr

My daily lesson plans/plans are laid out in Canvas Modules that are labeled by date. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Cell Phone Policy

Cell phones must be placed in the pockets in the back of the classroom. If they are not, then that student has chosen not to use their phone during my class period, even during breaks and bathroom breaks. If phones that are not stored in the pockets are seen or heard they will be taken up and turned into the office.

Additionally, any student with an "F" does NOT HAVE permission to have a cell phone during my class period at all. If they are not placed in the pockets and I see or hear them, they will be taken up. This includes during lunch. Students with an "F" need to complete the work they have missed that is giving them an "F".

***** Tests not made up within a week of the original test will be made-up with a 100% discussion questions test that will thoroughly test your knowledge of the entire unit. *****

    Tests:

    ******Updated Late Work Policy******

Work is due on the day that it is due in Canvas - 5 points per day will be deducted for late work up to a maximum on 50 points at 5 class days. After 5 class days, the highest that you can make on an assignment will be a 50.

********If you are in class and you choose not to do your work, you will receive a 3 on that work and will not be able to make it up!!!*********

If you had an excused absence and I take points off, please make sure to let me know and I will correct it. If it is an excused absence, you are required to complete all work by the 2nd class period once you get back, so it is best to keep up while you are out.

    Course Description:

Biology I is an introductory laboratory-based course designed to study living organisms and their physical environment. Students should apply scientific methods of inquiry and research in examining the following topics: biochemistry, cell structure, function and reproduction, cell energy, molecular basis of genetics, natural selection and diversity, and ecology. This course and the Subject Area Test are required for graduation.

    Required Materials:

Supplies should be kept in backpack and brought to class daily

    • Three-ring binder with paper for notes and handouts
    • Calculator
    • Pens, pencils, highlighters, and colored pencils
    • MacBook (charged) & compatible ear-buds
    • Textbook - Unit information will be available in Canvas at the top of each module.

    Basic Expectations and Procedures:

    Students will:

    • Be Respectful to me, your peers, and yourself.  Your behavior is a reflection of who you are.
    • Be Responsible.  Please come to class prepared and with completed assignments and required materials listed above.
    • Be a Team Player.   You are expected to work cooperatively with your peers.
    • Be Aware.  Ask questions when you need something clarified.
    • Class begins when the bell rings.  You are expected to be in your seat. You will sit in the same desk each day. Please come to class with a pass if you are late and join in quietly.
    • Begin work on the DO NOW/BELLRINGER assignment that is on the board as soon as you are seated.  Please do this quietly.
    • Be silent during all announcements.
    • You must ask before you leave the room.  If it is a bad time, you may not be able to leave the room.   We will have set times during class for bathroom breaks.
    • Cell phones and ear buds must be "parked" in phone pockets and in silent mode at all times.
    • Gaming will not be tolerated.  The student will first be warned, then the parent will be notified. It is very disrespectful and disruptive.
    • Students are required to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth and to follow all social distancing guidelines.  The desks in the room are not to be moved to ensure social distancing to the best extent possible.
    • All guidelines in place regarding Covid -19 must be followed at all times.
    • Food and drink are allowed in class.  Eating or drinking should not be disruptive to class. Spilled food or drink is the responsibility of the student who spilled it. Eating in class is a privilege that can be taken away if there is too much trash on the floor. No fast food cups with straws/disposable coffee cups, etc. will be allowed in the classroom.
    • Cell Phone Policy

Cell phones must be placed in the pockets in the back of the classroom. If they are not, then that student has chosen not to use their phone during my class period. If phones that have not been stored in the pockets are seen or heard they will be taken up and turned into the office.

Additionally, any student with an "F" does NOT HAVE permission to have a cell phone during my class period at all. If they are not placed in the pockets and I see or hear them, they will be taken up. This includes during lunch.

    Assignments and Grading:

All grades need to be viewed in ActiveStudentLinks to an external site.. Canvas grades are not your final grades.

Assignments  can be found in Canvas under the Modules tab.  Due dates are listed on each assignment.  If assignments are turned in late, 5 points will be deducted for each day the assignment is late. This class is Canvas based and you should check Canvas daily.

Grades will be assigned according to the ranges and weights established in the student handbook.  Major - 66%; Minor - 34%. You will have at least 3 Test/Major grades each nine weeks.  Retests are not given.  Be sure to adequately prepare for each unit test.

    Homework/Classwork Policy:

Classwork is to be completed when assigned in class.  If for some reason it isn't completed it will become homework.

Homework must be turned in at the beginning of class or by the submission date listed in Canvas.  If not, then you will not receive full credit for the assignment.

If you are absent on the due date of a major assignment or similar project, the assignment is still expected on or before that due date unless prior arrangements are made with me. In the event of an unforeseen absence, papers and projects or questions can always be e-mailed to me.  If your attached document cannot be successfully opened, it does not count as being turned in! You can't send me things saved in your One Drive.  You must save to your computer first.

    Late Work:

You are responsible to make up any missed work due to an absence.  All work is found on Canvas.  You will have until the second class period after the absence to make up the missed work.  Please see me after class to learn about what you missed.  It is YOUR responsibility to find out what you have missed. I will not chase you down to provide you with your missing work.  If your assignment is late due to an unexcused absence, your grade will be impacted negatively.  In the event of excused absences, you may make up a missed quiz or test outside of class time by making arrangements with me .  Please see me or email if you have an issue.

    Cheating or Plagiarism:

You are expected to pursue your work with integrity and honesty.  Falsifying your work in any way will not be tolerated.  Please cite sources properly.  Should you resort to such a choice, consequences will be determined in accordance with school policy.  Your grade will be negatively impacted and your parents, your guidance counselor, and administration will be notified immediately.

If you are caught cheating, your grade on the assignment will be an 11 - that way it cannot be mistaken for a mistake or missed assignment - and your parent or guardian will be notified.

**Please check Active Student / Parent for grades.  Contact the main office if you have trouble logging in.  You will also be updated on your current average four to five weeks with progress reports.**
