    Welcome Message

Welcome to Old Towne Middle School and 2017/2018 school year. Happy New School Year!!! I am John Thurmond the 8th Grade Math Inclusion teacher and I teach one block of Science.

    About the Teacher

I am a certified teacher with 6 certifications: English 7-12, Social Studies 7-12, Business Education 7-12, Middle School Math, and Elementary Education K-6. In February of 2016 I attained my certification in Special Education by attaining the required score for that area on the Praxis II assessment. I received my degree in Elementary Education with a minor in General Business Administration from Mississippi University for Women. I graduated in December of 2005, and started full time teaching the fall of 2006 and have been teaching ever since. I started my college experience at the University of Southern Mississippi, and I also attended the University of Mississippi “Ole Miss”. I completed my Masters in Special Education in October of 2016 at Grand Canyon University, and I will be starting my Doctorate August 31st at Grand Canyon University.
I have taught: 5th and 6th grade Math, Science, and Social Studies, 8th grade Pre-Algebra, and 7th, 9th, and 11th grade English Language Arts. Before I received my degree in Elementary Education, I was in the retail industry for almost 20 years. I have worked for a discount store, a department store, a wholesale florist, and a vacuum repair shop.

I have lived in almost every area of Mississippi, and even though I have enjoyed living on the coast with its sand and water it was time to come back to Jackson to be closer to aging family members. I love a good road trip and really do not have a favorite spot. I do hope to travel overseas at some point, and some of the countries I would like to visit are China, Russia, Israel, and most every country in Europe. This summer I was able to go to Charleston, West Virginia and Miami, Florida. During Spring Break of last school year I was able to go to Chicago, Illinois and reconnect with some first cousins I had not seen in several years. I have been known to attend several USM sports events, and I went to their bowl game in New Orleans, Louisiana. I also like going to concerts of some of my favorite entertainers when they are close by.

I am excited to a part of the team at Old Towne Middle School, and I love helping students learn and master concepts so that they can go to the next level. “To teach is to touch lives” anonymou
