Mrs. Smith's 1st Grade Class

Welcome to our 1st grade family! I am so excited to have each and every one of you on this adventure with me into imagination and dreams! We are "Full Steam Ahead"  for a wonderful year and I cannot wait to get started!

    About Mrs. Smith:
I graduated from Millsaps College in 1998 where I earned my BA in Elementary Education with an emphasis on literacy. I believe you can teach most any subject, life lesson, or skill from inside a story.  Encouraging children to find their own niche and reading interests is my goal..for if a child can love to read..he/she will succeed! I started my career many years ago in 1st grade, later moving up to 5th grade! It was there I learned the truest art of teaching is in the relationships. I taught all subjects, later moving to ELA emphasis and even taught all boy classes for two years! I love to find ways to help our young friends learn that reading can be fun and all it takes is finding that perfect book! After leaving the classroom in 2008, I spent several years at home with my children, Grace and Harrison. During these years, I cultivated my skills by working with preschool children in early literacy. Such fun years! I returned to the school setting as a Literacy Specialist in 2015 where I worked with struggling 3rd graders who needed that little extra time to hone in on their reading strategies. In 2016, Imy role as active mom at MAE changed to teacher! I loved teaching 2nd grade for  two years, before getting back to where it all began..1st grade!  This will be my 4th consecutive year working in 1st grade and my 16th year total.   Time flies when you are having fun!
Teaching is my passion, but being a wife and mother is my greatest joy! I've been married to Doug Smith for nearly 15 years. We have two beautiful children..Grace is a 9 year  old "dancing queen" who will be in 4th grade at MAUE this year!! She is also a member of Encore Dance Elite dancers which you will hear a lot about..and will see LOTS of pictures!! Grace brings such joy as my "wild child"! Harrison is my 12 year old son who will be a 7th grader at MMS this fall!  He loves all things science/animal related. Harrison can figure out just about anything with very little help from instruction manuals! Harrison is going to be playing football at MMS this year along with being an active part of his youth group at Madison United Methodist.
We bleed blue and orange! Go Jags!
I've enjoyed watching many of your children grow as Kindergarteners and look forward to exploring great things in 1st!  We will use our hands, imaginations, and talents in all we do! In addition to skills..my greatest goal is to teach love and kindness.
Are you ready? Here we go!!
I am so excited to be working with Ms. Williams this year! Please get to know her below! :)
Hello everyone and welcome to first grade!!

I’m Ms. Williams and I’ll be assisting Mrs. Smith in the classroom this year. I’m new to Madison Avenue but not to teaching. Previously I taught elementary for 12 years, but took some time off to stay home with my now 7 year old daughter, Lillian. We will both be returning to Madison Avenue Elementary this year after a year of virtual learning, and I couldn’t be more excited about getting back into a classroom and doing what I was called to do. We live in Madison and have one pet, a sweet bunny named Oreo. I’m looking forward to meeting each of you and working together to make this the best year ever!!

    ❤️Ms. Williams
