The first year of the secondary Health Science program, Health Science Core, introduces the student to careers available in the health field, basic anatomy and physiology, and basic patient care skills. Upon completion of this first year introductory course, the student will be trained to be an entry-level general basic health care assistant. The student will be better able to make an informed choice of a health occupation that he/she plans to pursue. This course is taught for one year, and it earns 2.0 Carnegie Units that can be used for electives or to satisfy the health requirement toward graduation.
The emphasis of the second year, Health Care and Clinical Services, is primarily to expose students to advanced skills in the various health occupations and the basic health care sciences. Students may participate in shadowing experiences in selected health care facilities. Upon completion of the second year advanced course, the student will be trained to work as an entry-level assistant in various health occupations and will be certified in CPR at the health care provider level. This course is taught for one year, and it earns 2.0 Carnegie Units. Students who complete Health Science and Clinical Services will receive two science credits toward graduation requirements.
This program includes a minimum of 100 hours of clinical-type experience over the two year period. This clinical-type experience can include tours of health care facilities, guest speakers, laboratory practice/demonstration in the classroom, and observation experiences in medical facilities.
