What does it mean to be Certified or Non-Certified?

A Certified substitute holds an active or expired teaching license through a state Department of Education.

A Non-Certified substitute does not hold and has never held a teaching license through a state Department of Education. Certificates issued through other non-government entities do not qualify as a teaching license.

I am a retired teacher. Can I substitute?

Yes! As long as you have a  90-day break in service from your retirement date, you may return to work part time as a substitute.

I only want to work at certain schools. Am I allowed to do that?

Yes! You are allowed to only accept assignments that work for you.

I worked as a Kelly Education Services substitute in the 2022-2023 school year. What do I need to do to be able to sub in the 2023-2024 school year?

Please submit an application through our website here. If you subbed in the Madison County School District through Kelly Education Services in the 2022-2023 school year, you will not need to be fingerprinted again. 

I do not have a teaching degree. Can I substitute?

Yes! If you have received your high school diploma or GED and are 21 years or older*, you are eligible to become a substitute.  *Preferred

I was a long-term substitute for Madison County Schools in the 2022-2023 school year. Do I have to reapply to become a regular substitute?

No. Please send an email to subs@madison-schools.com to let us know that you would like to continue to be a substitute.

Is there an interview process to become a substitute?

Yes. Once you have applied, you will be contacted by one of our substitute coordinators to set up an interview. If you subbed for our district in the 2022-2023 school year, you will not have to be interviewed again.

Are there any insurance benefits offered?

As a part-time hourly employee, you will not be eligible for any insurance benefits through the school district.

How will I accept assignments?

You will be using the Frontline Absence Management system to accept assignments. You will be able to receive phone calls or browse the website for upcoming assignments.

Will I be trained?

Yes! We will be providing orientation on the Frontline system as well as topics such as classroom and behavioral management.

Will I have to keep up with a timesheet?

No! You will be able to clock in and clock out at each school. This time will be automatically tracked for you, so you will not need to keep up with your hours.

Do I have to get fingerprinted to become a substitute?

Yes. All prospective MCSD employees must be fingerprinted and submit to a background check.
