    Rosa Scott Accelerated English I Summer Reading

     

    All Accelerated English I students must read two novels and complete one assignment for each novel. These assignments will be collected at the beginning of your first Accelerated English I class. Accelerated English I teachers will schedule activities and reading comprehension tests for the novels during the first two weeks of school. Please be prepared.

     

    Accelerated English I: The Chosen by Chaim Potok

                                         Lord of the Flies by William Golding

                                                   

    After reading The Chosen by Chaim Potok, students will complete one of the following items:

     

                ART

    -Design a book cover that depicts a particular scene of importance.  This scene must illustrate one of the main themes of the novel.   Explain the importance of the scene, which theme it illustrates, and why you chose that particular scene in a well-written paragraph.  Be sure to have your artwork and paragraph on your first day of class.  Your illustration should be full color and 8 ½” x 11”. Your paragraph should be typed.

     

    OR

               WRITING

    -Think about a character from the novel to which you best relate.  Write a five-paragraph essay that explains why you feel you relate to this character most.  Remember to include an introduction, three body paragraphs of evidence and support, and one short conclusion.  Your essay should be typed and ready to turn in at the beginning of your first day of English class.

    After reading Lord of the Flies by William Golding, students will complete one of the following items:

     

                ART

    -Choose a character from the novel and create a mask that represents either his shame and self-consciousness or his freedom and liberation from it.  If you choose Jack, do not simply recreate the mask that he makes for himself in the novel.  Be sure your mask is original and illustrates real insight.  Your mask should be about 8 ½” x 11” and in full color.  Type a well-written paragraph that explains the choices you made in designing your character’s mask.

     

    OR

                WRITING

    -Imagine you are one of the characters trapped on the deserted island with the other boys.  Write seven journal entries about the events in which you participate or witness while on the island.  Your journal entries should focus on important events and should be consistent in their point of view. Your journal entries should be typed and ready to turn in at the beginning of your first English class.
