    What is 1:M Digital Initiative?

    1:M is a program being implemented in Madison County High Schools.  Students in grades 9-12 will receive a laptop computer.  MCS recognizes that access to technology in school gives students greater opportunities to learn, engage, communicate and develop skills that will prepare them for work, life and citizenship.  We are committed to helping students develop progressive technology and communication skills. 

    Is there a fee to participate in the program?

    Yes, there is a $50.00 annual non-refundable fee for each student, with deductibles per damage incident.  This fee DOES NOT covers the first incident.  Please refer to the Student Technology Handbook for all cost per occurrence. 

    Does every student have to participate in the 1:M Initiative?

    Yes, every high school student will be required to participate in the initiative.

    Is my child's MSIS number required for registration?
    No.  MSIS number is not required, but if available please provide. 
    What are the procedures if my child breaks a device?

    In the event that a laptop is damaged, lost or stolen the laptop user will be assessed a $50.00 deductible for the repair or replacement of the laptop for the first occurrence.  Additional fees will be charged after first occurrence per device.  Please refer to the Student Technology Handbook for all cost per occurrence.  

    • First damage occurrence: $50.00 and student will get a replacement laptop upon payment of the deductible.
    • Second damage occurrence: $50.00 plus the cost to repair the laptop or fair market value and possible loss of laptop take home privileges. The replacement laptop will be checked in and out daily during the school day.
    • Third damage occurrence: Cost to repair the laptop or fair market value and loss of take home laptop privileges. 

    Will students be able to access any website once they leave the campus?

    No, the Internet filter provided by MCS will continue to filter on and off campus.  Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires our network to be restricted of online content.  No filter is guaranteed to provide 100% safety at all times.  MCS does its best to ensure that our students are not exposed to undesirable content.

    Can students individualize their laptop desktop?

    Yes, as long as they meet the guidelines set forth in the Laptop User Agreement.  

    Can students customize their laptop sleeve and/or protective case?
    Yes, for an additional charge, they can purchase the protective case and sleeve.  
    Can students remove their laptop protective case?
    No, keep the laptop in the district-issued or approved sleeve and case. 
    What if we already own a device and want to use it?

    This initiative is all about teaching and learning.  We believe that it will be most beneficial if all students use the same device and all software is the same.  

    Will student files be backed up?

    No, students in grades 9-12 will be responsible for all data on their student assigned device.

    What accounts will each student have?

    Students in grades 6-12 have email and CANVAS (Learning Management System) accounts provided by MCS. 

    Can I get my home printer to work on my MacBook Air?

    Yes, many printers will work by simply connecting the printer to the MacBook Air.  Students will have rights to install printers.
