Character Education At Mannsdale Elementary

We are pleased to be able to offer character education at Mannsdale Elementary using the Core Essentials Program provided through Chick-fil-A. This program is the result of the combined efforts of a dedicated group of teachers and parents. It is designed to provide me with the tools to teach values to your children that will enable them to treat others right, make smart decisions and maximize their potential.
The Core Essentials Program focuses on a "value of the month" that encourages individual classrooms, the entire school and each family to emphasize the same aspects of each value. The core belief of the program is that "it takes an inward attitude to influence outward behavior". The values presented are common attitudes that every parent and teacher ants children to learn and demonstrate.
The Core Essential Core Values for the 2012 - 2013 school year are:
  • September - Respect - Showing others they are important by what you say and do.
  • October - Initiative - Seeing what needs to be done and doing it.
  • November - Uniqueness - learning more about others so you can know more about yourself.
  • December - Joy - Finding a way to be happy, even when thins don't go your way.
  • January - Determination - Deciding it's worth it to finish what you have started.
  • February - Kindeness - Showing others they are valuable by how you treat them.
  • March - Courage - Being brave enough to do what you should do even when you're afraid.
  • April - Humility - Putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve.
  • May - Forgiveness - Deciding that someone who has wronged you doesn't have to pay.
The Core Essentials Program is presented to students in Kindergarten through 5th grades every two weeks for about 30 minutes. The program will be presented through classroom discussion, activities, literature, multi-media and games. I try to vary the method of instruction to make learning values fun and enjoyable for your children.
Each week the value is presented on morning announcements. Students in grades K - 2 will receive Tablecards to bring home to enable parents to emphasize the value through family discussions and activities. A monthly newsletter will be posted on my website to give you an overview of the "value of the month". Students may be presented with "Value-Able" cards that are used as an incentive for "catching" kids displaying the value of the month.
At the end of each month every classroom teacher will select the student in her class that has best demonstrated the value of the month. They will be featured in the newspaper, on a bulletin board display and will be presented with an award certificate. We will also have a special activity planned for our monthly winners.
Please check my website each month to read the monthly newsletter. If you feel that you have something to share in one of the areas and would like to volunteer, I would love to hear from you. Your input in the character education program is also welcome.
