Madison Avenue Elementary K-2 became a
Whole School in August 2005.

As part of the initiative, we receive grant funds to integrate

the arts in all subject areas.Art Studio

The arts…drama, music, dance and visual arts…are used as a springboard to tap
into each child’s multiple intelligence.

Schools participating in the Whole Schools Initiative are supported through grant funds, professional and technical assistance for up to six years, provided the school is effectively engaged in the program and complies with program requirements.

Matching funds for our grant are provided through various PTO fund raisers
throughout the school year.

Our Mission:

Is to inspire every child to be an “MAE Artist” by learning to explore, enrich

Arts Education at Madison Avenue K-2

MAE K-2 is a member of the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Whole Schools Initiative.
The Whole Schools Initiative, Mississippi’s first comprehensive statewide arts education
program, uses the arts as a vehicle for promoting high-quality instruction and learning for students in all disciplines. This unique program goes far beyond “art for art’s sake” and applies the learning power of the arts across the curriculum.

As a “Whole School”, Madison Avenue Elementary K2, MAE, has created anenvironment of learning by integrating the arts in all areas—Math, Language Arts, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. MAE is able to do this thanks to our supportive PTO who makes it possible to match the funds the Whole School grant provides.

The Whole School initiative is provided in part by the Mississippi Arts Commission, a
state agency, and the National Endowment of the Arts, a federal agency

Visual Arts

patriotic

All students spend an hour a week experiencing the visual arts in
art class. Students have fun learning to creatively express themselves in a
variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and
printmaking. Students are told they cannot fail at art!!

Subject matter draws on each student's observation and
imagination. Using basic Elements of Art and Principles of Design, lessons are
integrated with science, math, language arts and social studies concepts to
create a lively, interactive learning environment. Art from various cultures
throughout time is also introduced in class.

Throughout the school year, student artwork is displayed throughout the school.
We also have many arts related events/projects including our annual "Arts on the Avenue".
This usually is towards the end of the month of April, but be sure to check the Arts calendar
to make sure you don't miss the next exhibit or event.

In addition, classroom teachers at Madison Avenue   K-2 are committed to reaching every student by infusing the arts into their standard curriculum, teaching all subjects with and through the arts.

Fruit Still Life
Research shows that students taught through the arts learn to develop creative ways to approach problems, critical thinking skills, confidence and
self-esteem, and a deeper understanding of themselves, their own culture, and the cultures of others.

Our vision for the Art Program at Madison Avenue K-2 is as follows:

· Every student knows basic art history (key figures).

· Every student gains confidence.

· Every student is exposed to varying media.

· Every student is offered an outlet for expression.

· Every student is familiar with the Elements of Art, and the Principles of Design.

· Every student can be successful in art class!
